The Siding Saga Continues

Got the two replacement windows for the kitchen installed . They look so NICE. The view is the same but there are no cracks in the glass or condensation between the panes.

Kaitlyn had been here last week and was quite concerned that our house was "broken". It looks pretty bad right now with the siding in various stages of removal, some of the tarpaper flapping in the breeze, and some repairs partially done. Of course the green tractor parked under the kitchen window is a nice touch too. Good thing the nearest neighbour is 1/2 mile away and is related, otherwise the property values would take quite a beating.

Found that what we thought was rot along the plate on the southeast corner of the house, is actually fire damage that was not really repaired properly.

History: in April of 1918 this house was just about complete. A few feet east ( where our double garage is) there was a log house that the family had lived in for ?years. The log house caught fire and burned to the ground. The "new " house ( the one we presently live in) also caught fire. When those fighting the fire realized that the log house was beyond hope they concentrated on saving the "new" house. They had pumped the well dry and our elderly neighbour had told us that if it hadn't been for the snow banks still around, this house would have gone too.

We were aware of the damage to the roof as its very evident that some of the rafters have been replaced but we had never seen the damage to the east side of the house before. Wonder what else we may find? Stay tuned.

Are you actually changing the siding? Or is this just part of putting up a veranda?
