Our basic transport to Willowdale school in Purves Manitoba was walking when the weather was nice enough to do so in the 50's and 60's for my siblings and I. Most of the time we would get a car ride to school but would have to walk home in the afternoon if the weather permitted. When I got to be about 10 years old Esther, Ben and I would ride on our semi retired work horse "George". George was old and we could hear his joints creak as he plodded along. His back was wide and sitting on him would be like the three of us sitting on a dining room table five feet off the ground. We would lead him up beside a fence post climb it and step on to George. He was a very quiet horse and the ride to school was slow but better than walking. At school we put George in the barn behind the school house with the other horses until 4:00 when we rode him home again at about double pace as he and we were heading home!

Next dad got a quarter horse colt "Lightning" who had a lot more fire than George ever did. We rode him too but with his energy and speed dad decided to build a cart with his first new Krushel welder he had bought. The two wheeled cart was built of scrap steel and used bicycle wheels.
